How It All Started
Bioactive Bugs UK began the way a lot of good ideas do — with a single vivarium that wasn’t quite working. Mould kept creeping back across the substrate, the leaf litter never seemed to break down, and no matter how often we cleaned, the enclosure never felt truly alive. After adding a small culture of springtails and isopods, everything changed within weeks. The substrate stayed fresh, the leaf litter disappeared into the soil, and the whole enclosure finally felt like a living ecosystem rather than a tank that needed constant maintenance.
That experience sent us down a rabbit hole of culturing, breeding and testing different springtail and isopod species, substrates and setups. What started as a hobby quickly became a passion project — and eventually, Bioactive Bugs UK, a dedicated UK supplier built specifically around springtails, isopods and the bioactive supplies that support them.
A Genuine Passion For Springtails & Isopods
Unlike many general reptile suppliers who stock a few tubs of “clean-up crew” as an afterthought, springtails and isopods are all we do. That focus means every culture we sell has been bred, monitored and despatched by people who understand exactly what makes a colony thrive — from the right substrate mix and humidity gradient to the small details that separate a struggling culture from a booming one.
We keep dozens of springtail and isopod cultures running at any one time, constantly testing feeding regimes, substrates and housing setups so that the advice in our care guides reflects what actually works in UK homes — not just what’s commonly repeated online.
Healthy, Captive-Bred Stock — Always
Every culture we despatch is captive-bred here in the UK. We never sell wild-caught stock, which means healthier, hardier animals that are already adjusted to life in captivity and far more likely to establish quickly in your vivarium.
Before any culture leaves us, we check that it’s active, well-fed and free from pests such as mites or mould overload. Cultures are packed to minimise stress and temperature fluctuation in transit, and despatched on days that avoid your order sitting in a depot over a weekend.
Helping Beginners Succeed
One of the things we care about most is helping new keepers get off to a confident start. Springtails and isopods are forgiving, low-maintenance animals — but only if you understand the basics of housing, feeding and humidity before your culture arrives.
That’s why every order comes with clear care information, and why we’ve put real effort into our care guides — written in plain English, based on hands-on experience, and free from the generic, copy-paste advice you’ll find on a lot of sites.
Whether you’re setting up your very first bioactive enclosure or expanding a collection of vivariums, our aim is the same: to make sure your clean-up crew arrives healthy, settles in quickly, and goes on to thrive for years to come.
